My name is Sheila, a Jamaican born retired schoolteacher in my 70s, living in the UK for over 60 years. I’m outgoing, conscientious and enthusiastic. I try to encourage others to achieve their potential. My interests and hobbies include voluntary church activities, gardening, reading, theatre visits, cooking, entertaining, and attending the gym.
Since school days, I have enjoyed music and dancing, including performing in school productions. When members of the JÁNUKA dance group attended my church to participate in a Black History event in 2008, I was smitten by the music, costume, energy, exuberance and joy of the dance and curious about quadrille’s roots as it was new to me. I therefore joined the group in 2009.
Being a member of JÁNUKA gives me the opportunity to do something I love – dancing, with a wonderful group of people. Physical exercise helps me to maintain good health and well-being, lifting my mood and energising me when feeling tired or low. It’s an invaluable part of my weekly routine. As well as dancing and socialising at the regular meetings and public performances, I’m learning about the history of quadrille and the cultural heritage of Jamaica and the Caribbean. I just love it all!
