I am Ralston Brown, also known as Roy. I came to the UK in the 60s, from St James Jamaica, aged 17, for a better life. I am ambitious, patient, willing to learn, trustworthy, and always on the move. My family is my number one. I enjoy DIY, exercising, socialising and reading about my ancestors. I have been an engineer specialising in welding and grinding, also a tailor and publican. I am now active in my church community and fraternal brothers association.
I experienced quadrille as a young boy growing up in Jamaica, where I saw my grandparents and family happily dancing it. They sometimes included me in their social dancing, which I enjoyed. I later saw quadrille in the UK (2013) at an event where JÁNUKA was performing. Some dance moves and the music reminded me of my childhood experience. I did not hesitate to join JÁNUKA in 2013. I love the company, togetherness, our love of dancing and commitment to learn more about our history.
I dance quadrille in remembrance of my early ancestors, what they did to keep themselves happy, because they had no freedom. I want to keep memories of their determination to survive clear in my mind. I dedicate my time to dance and learn more about our history, with the hope that my children and grandchildren will follow in my footsteps.
