Januka Logo Breakdown
1. The prominent Swallow Tail Humming Bird

Also known has the Doctor Bird. It is the National Bird of Jamaica. Of the over 320 species of Humming birds in the Americas, the Dr Bird is endemic to Jamaica.

This beautiful bird with its bright iridescent emerald green colour, long black tails, black crest and long pointed red beak are breath- taking.

The image portrayed is of an old fashioned doctor wearing coat tails, top hat with needle-like bill and scissor- like tails. This gives the illusion of caring and healing potential.

The bird’s unique manoeuvrability is evident in the rotation of its wings in a figure of eight motion, enabling it to fly backward, hover for a long time in one place, and fly forward.

Because of its small size and green feathers, it can easily hide among the branches of trees.

The speed at which it travels from place to place, makes this cunning bird hard to catch or to kill.

Traditional folklore of the indigenous people of Jamaica, assert the bird is sacred with magical powers. They call it the “God Bird” because they believe the bird is the re-embodiment of dead souls.

We specifically chose the Dr Bird’s because of its national status, its territorialism, distinctive beauty, capabilities and mysticism. Its agility, strength, resilience, flexibility, freedom to roam, cunningness, stillness and escapism are all astounding attributes, which are embodied in our Logo.

The Bird is symbolic of life’s journey, the importance of reconnecting and learning from our past and looking at the future with hopefulness for a long and prosperous life. The Bird’s long black tails are closed and wrap around the keyhole to protect and heal us.

2. The key hole

Represents a closed entrance to a large brightly lit room.

Our enslaved ancestors secretly watched the Europeans colonialists and their guests dancing Ballroom style quadrille in Great houses behind closed doors, and defiantly taught themselves how to dance it at nights in their camps.

On our Logo, The Dr Bird representing our ancestors, is seen hovering over the keyhole of a brightly lit room, spellbound in admiration as it watches us freely dancing quadrille – our style.

3. The quadrille dancers

Wearing costume made from the bandana material (the red and white plaid cotton), which is the traditional folk material worn by women in Jamaica. This material was later chosen to make the National Costume on the occasion of the Queens visit to Jamaica in 1953. However bandana costumes vary in their stylistic designs.

On our Logo, the dancers are dancing as a couple reflecting the normal format of quadrille dancing.

4. The olive green background

Symbolic of nature, new beginnings and new growth.

On our Logo it signifies our growth and development as a group with a defined purpose.
