About Us

We are JÁNUKA Quadrille Dance Group!

JÁNUKA is an acronym for Jamaican Nurses in the United Kingdom and their Associates.

We are an adult Quadrille Dance Group. Since our formation in 2006, we have been operating as a small, voluntary, self-funded, non-profit making, community group. We are based in Catford, South East London, UK.

What we do

JÁNUKA have been happily dancing the quadrille – Jamaican style – since 2006. We thoroughly enjoy dancing and take great pride in promoting what we strongly believe is our Jamaican cultural heritage.

Our activities include:
  1. Perform and teach Jamaican style quadrille dancing.
  2. Facilitate dance workshops in community settings including schools.
  3. Occasionally demonstrate other inherited traditional dances.
  4. Sing Jamaican folk songs.
  5. Have weekly practice sessions to develop the skills and confidence needed to perform publicly to a variety of audiences.
  6. Provide taster sessions throughout the year for those interested in joining our group.
  7. Enhance our knowledge and understanding of the historical context and cultural significance of quadrille dancing.
  8. Use creative licence to tell a celebratory story, via the quadrille dance, of our ancestors’ lived experiences and triumph over oppression.
  9. Organise concerts to entertain, fundraise and educate about our history and culture, entitled “The Will to Survive”.
  10. Provide opportunities for members to socialise throughout the year.
